What To Look For (And Avoid) In A Sport Psychology Consultant

What to Look For

·         Most importantly, you want to have a good connection and feel comfortable with the consultant.  Many consultants (including me) will offer a free introductory phone session to establish whether mental training will meet your needs and to make sure that both of you feel like you will work well together.

·         I would highly suggest working with someone who is certified through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP)

What to Avoid

·         Anyone who can guarantee that you will win or see immediate results (Would you trust a coach who said they could guarantee success after one day of practice?)

·         Someone without an advanced degree in sport psychology

·         A psychologist, motivational speaker, or life coach without any educational background in sport science
